The role of the marshes in and around Berlin during wartime: natural barriers that inherently resisted human cruelty. Today, these landscapes are places of sanctuary where decay and life coexist peacefully and cyclically. What can we learn from swamps – especially in terms of humanity, solidarity and resistance. How can we create a coexistence that is neither oppressive nor dominant? Grewe gathered materials such as dried needles and ferns, which she then burns to ash. From these ashes, she creates mineral glazes, presented as ceramic “photographs”: frozen compositions of the swamp, windows into these landscapes.
